A report on the global emissions in the textile industry – Case

OpenCO2net conducted a study of the global climate impacts of the Finnish textile and fashion industry for Finnish Textile & Fashion and developed a carbon footprint calculator for companies within the industry, enabling them to calculate their carbon footprint.

Finnish Textile & Fashion wanted to assess the global climate impacts of the Finnish textile and fashion industry and, as part of the Carbon Neutral Textile Industry 2035 commitment, provide a concrete tool for companies in the industry to easily and reliably determine their emissions.

OpenCO2net developed a browser-based carbon footprint calculator for Finnish Textile & Fashion in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard. This calculator enables the textile and fashion companies to easily and reliably calculate their scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. OpenCO2net worked closely with Finnish Textile & Fashion and its member companies to implement the calculator. To ensure the calculator’s suitability for companies in the industry, OpenCO2net interviewed several companies in the field, collected company-specific data through a survey, and collaborated with a steering group composed of company representatives. The calculator can also calculate the emissions during the use phase of textile products and save various calculations.

In the project, OpenCO2net, in collaboration with Finnish Textile & Fashion, conducted a study on the global climate impacts of the Finnish textile industry. The study considered emissions from the production and transportation of raw materials used by Finnish textile and fashion companies, as well as the emissions during the use phase of finished textile and fashion products. The report also provided suggestions for concrete actions that companies in the industry can take to reduce their emissions.

“The textile industry is global by nature, and a significant part of material and product production is located outside Finland's borders. We wanted to provide information on where the most significant emissions in the Finnish textile industry are generated and how to affect them. I believe that the information provided by OpenCO2net’s expertise and the customized carbon footprint calculator for the industry will broadly serve the needs of companies in the sector” says Satumaija Levón, Chief Advisor of Sustainability and Circular Economy at the Finnish Textile & Fashion.
