The calculator enables Stalatube to compare emissions from its products to traditional solutions. The calculator was implemented based on market needs.

A family-owned Stalatube manufactures elements made of stainless steel, such as pipes, beams, and refined components. Stalatube’s assets include exceptionally strong high-strength products that belong to the highest strength class. Products are sold for various purposes, such as in the construction, energy, and transportation industries.

OpenCO2net created a customized OpenCO2.net calculator for Stalatube, enabling Stalatube to compare the greenhouse gas emissions of its products with competing products. The calculator is based on ISO 14 067 standard, which is the most widely used product carbon footprint standard in the world.

Data to support climate claims

Stalatube started implementing the project at the request of its customers.

“Along with the new reporting directives, customers’ desire to receive quantitative data instead of qualitative data has been clearly evident. Creating just an impression is not enough. There must be figures on how we can influence customer operations in the supply chain.” says Teppo Lassila, Stalatube’s EQHS Manager.

“If you want to reduce the carbon footprint of a product, the easiest way is to reduce material emissions. This is also the basis of our high-strength strategy.” continues Lassila.

Lassila provides an example of a bus: when less steel is needed to manufacture a bus, it lightens the weight of the bus. Lower energy consumption can significantly impact the emissions throughout the entire life cycle of the bus. However, in order to enable comparisons, a calculator is needed that allows for comparing the Stalatube’s solutions to traditional solutions.

When choosing a partner, reliability, credibility, and comparable results played an important role.

Added value for customers

The calculator has already been put into service in Stalatube and has brought tangible benefits. The results have been used in modelling example scenarios, and the data has been utilized as a tool in sales and marketing.

When asked about Stalatube’s plans for the upcoming years, Lassila’s response comes almost without hesitation: “By using the right material quality in the right application, the structure can be optimized leading to savings in material usage and emissions. So, one could say that our goal is to sell the customer as little pipe as possible, as quality replaces quantity.”
