Nevel offers advanced infrastructure solutions for industry and real estate. The services and solutions Nevel provide include sustainable energy and circular economy solutions. Nevel operates over 130 energy production plants and manages more than 40 district heating networks. The company is committed to climate-positive growth and promoting the transition to CO2-neutral energy production. Nevel operates in Finland, Sweden, and Estonia. In addition to its own sustainability and climate goals, Nevel will also be subject to the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and its requirements in the future.
The company already has in-house expertise in emissions calculation and has previously calculated its own scope 1 and scope 2 emissions. For the 2024 calculation, Nevel wanted assistance in calculating the scope 3 emissions across its value chain. OpenCO2net supported Nevel, particularly in defining the boundaries of the calculation and selecting the correct emission factors. The scope 3 emissions calculation project was carried out in collaboration with OpenCO2net's experts.
“The collaboration went well and effortlessly. In case of any issues, help was available, and the final report was clear and met our needs well,” comments Heikki Aaltonen, the environmental manager of Nevel.
According to the requirements of the Sustainability Reporting Directive and its ESRS E1 standard, the company will now need to calculate its scope 3 emissions. For many companies, this means an increased workload, particularly related to data collection, as they must review all activities within their value chain in addition to their own operations. The workload also surprised Nevel, and Aaltonen states that a lot of data was gathered from various sources, and finding the relevant information for the calculation required a thorough understanding of emissions accounting. However, starting the work on time will help prepare for sustainability reporting and ease data collection in the future.
For future calculations, Nevel acquired access to the OpenCO2net platform and will carry out emissions calculations independently based on the consulting project completed in 2024. The scope 3 calculation was copied as a template under Nevel's user account, so the calculation boundaries defined together and the emission factors selected by experts will ease calculations in the coming years.
“The project left us with the confidence that we can continue to contact the expert who assisted us if any questions arise regarding the calculation. We are eager to compare the emissions from the coming years with the results of previous calculations,” Aaltonen continues.
OpenCO2net provides tools and services for carbon footprint calculation in compliance with standards. Our carbon footprint calculators are suitable for emissions calculation based on both the GHG Protocol standards and the ESRS E1 standard. In addition to emissions calculation, we offer consulting services, such as for Science Based Target setting and gap analysis for the ESRS E1 standard.
Contact us via the form or directly to our expert, and we can figure out together which OpenCO2.net calculator would work best for your organization.
