A cybersecurity company founded in Ireland and now with offices globally, Smarttech247 Group plc, tested the OpenCO2.net carbon footprint platform for calculating its greenhouse gas emissions.
Smarttech247 has around 200 employees worldwide and generates more than €12 million in revenue. The company approaches its Environmental, Social, and Governance program with a commitment to fostering sustainable growth, enhancing social impact, and maintaining strong ethical governance. Recognizing the increasing importance of ESG in driving long-term value, Smarttech247 integrates environmental responsibility by adopting energy-efficient technologies and minimizing its carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability goals. OpenCO2net provided the tools and support for Smarttech247 to start calculating its Scope 1-3 emissions.
The engagement was part of OpenCO2.net’s Market Explorer project funded by Business Finland. One of the project's objectives was to test the feasibility of using the OpenCO2.net carbon footprint platform in the Irish ICT sector and get feedback on using OpenCO2.net tools. In the trial, Smarttech247 received a test period for the OpenCO2.net tools, conducted the calculations independently, and received support from OpenCO2net during four one-hour sparring sessions. Thus, it was possible to carry out the calculations for a ICT company with little assistance and simultaneously enhance the company’s expertise in emissions calculations.
Smarttech247 was highly satisfied with the trial and OpenCO2.net carbon footprint platform tools. The company’s CSR and Sustainability Manager Adina Dumitrescu described how working with OpenCO2net was: “The tool and company were a pleasure to work with. The platform is intuitive and easy to navigate, making the process of calculating GHG emissions straightforward. The team was supportive and knowledgeable, providing valuable guidance throughout the process.”
As a potential area for development, Dumitrescu mentioned, that while the tool is comprehensive, incorporating specific nuances of the Irish market, such as local data for calculations, would further enhance its applicability for Irish businesses. This would involve considering factors that are unique characteristics of the Irish economy.
Expanding and maintaining the emissions database is one of OpenCO2.net’s primary tasks, and updates are made twice a month. As part of this project, the emissions database was supplemented with Ireland-specific emission factors for fuels and purchased energy. Need for improvements was found in ICT-related emission factors.
